Released ahead of their debut EP Mother, due out November 21, the track sets the tone for a collection of songs that reflect the chaos, strength, and fire of modern womanhood.

Written from the perspective of a woman stretched thin by the pressures of everyday life, Mother explores the emotional labour that often goes unnoticed, particularly in relationships. It’s an anthem for anyone who’s ever felt like they’re expected to be everything to everyone, all the time.

“This song is for the women doing it all”, says frontwoman and lyricist Jodie Gummer. “The ones juggling motherhood, work, emotional caretaking. It captures that moment where you snap, when you’re exhausted, frustrated, and fighting for the girl you used to be. That feeling of being pushed to your limits, and starting to feel a little crazy because no one seems to see what you’re holding.”

Driven by a killer bass riff that pulses like a heartbeat through the track, Mother is gritty, loud, and honest. It showcases the band’s signature mix of heavy guitars, tight rhythmic interplay, and emotionally charged vocals. It’s a sonic punch that wrestles with the tension between chaos and control, emotion and edge.

Following the breakout success of Quirk, Mother cements Dead Cherry as one of Aotearoa’s most compelling new rock voices – cutting through the noise with raw honesty and relatable stories, and delivering uniquely gritty and groove-driven rock n roll, built for the stage.
