Mountains to Sea is the song that marked the beginning of Carl o Yāng’s musical journey. He wrote the track in 2012 at the age of 17, in his uncle and aunt’s basement, on the morning of his grandmother’s funeral.
Although Carl had been writing songs for some time, none had felt truly complete until this one. Finishing Mountains to Sea gave him a profound sense that music was the path he wanted to pursue – a conviction that has remained ever since.
The track was first recorded as part of a three-track EP when Carl was 19, but he chose to wait, wanting to develop both the song and himself as a musician before releasing it. Now, more than a decade later, he is thrilled to finally share it with the world.
The song reflects a spiritual awakening Carl experienced at the time. Following his first psychedelic journey, he was pulled out of illusions that had shaped daily life, gaining a new perspective on the world. The chorus became a cry to friends and family to let go of the person they once knew, as Carl sensed that his transformation would be more difficult if those around him resisted his growth.
Mountains to Sea was co-produced with established Wellington producer Nate Rapana. Much like Carl’s own journey, the song underwent a long process to reach its final form, including last-minute changes to the wording in the final chorus.
The outro speaks directly to revelations Carl received about leaders and powerful organizations seeking to control society and strip away freedom, while denying the truth that humans are divine beings.
