Club Ruby travel back to their roots for latest single What My Bones Know. Filmed in Thailand and Vietnam (across Bangkok, Hà Nội, Da Nang, Hội An, and Saigon) by Christian Tjandrawinata, the video shows the leaders of the Auckland pop-punk group make a long-awaited homecoming to their Asian heritage. Their return was notably more meaningful than ever, especially as they were seriously assaulted in October.

Deemed “Ones To Watch” by the Aotearoa Charts, Club Ruby will also triumphantly share their sophomore EP Don’t Gaslight Me! on Friday, January 30th: a coming-of-age journey that navigates mental health, intergenerational trauma, and immigrant identity.

“The [October] assault brings to light that the issues and discrimination we make music about is real,” President Ruby (lead singer Jade Lewis) says. “In the face of adversity, we won’t let ourselves be silenced.”

Thanks to overwhelming community support via GiveALittle, Club Ruby were able to recover—and with a renewed sense of purpose.

What My Bones Know is the piano-led closer of Don’t Gaslight Me! Produced by Christian Tjandrawinata and made with the support of NZ On Air, its lyrical narrative and musical-theatre style follow the luminous “Komorebi” and smash-hit “Heartbreak Overtime”. The former is an ode to family roots that UnderTheRadar praised as “grungey pop balladry”, while the latter reached #5 on the Aotearoa Charts and even amassed 55,000+ views on YouTube.

What My Bones Know was written and produced in one day, with “tears between takes as we poured our hearts into lyrics that touch on how it feels to be torn between cultures, losing touch with your native tongue, being far from family, and feeling the weight of trauma that turns out to be baggage from your ancestors.”

Inspired by Stefanie Foo’s autobiography of the same title, What My Bones Know helped President Ruby reframe and understand her own mental health trauma — ”not as a fixed identity, but as a way to navigate care while honouring my own experience and the experiences of my ancestors.”

“I now see these labels as constellations drawn within a sea of symptoms,” President Ruby adds. “Constellations that healthcare professionals use to help with treatment.”

“But we all have our own unique constellations that make up who we are, and it’s our responsibility to explore what works for us, and to never use these labels or our past as an excuse to continue the cycle.”

Club Ruby will soon present a body of work forged through remarkable strength: “We feel compelled to keep going and tell our own stories.”

“We hope What My Bones Know makes you, and your bones, feel less alone.”

Club Ruby’s music video for What My Bones Know is out now.
